Identifying Terpenes When There Isn’t a Lab Report

When you consume cannabis, there is one thing that a lot of people don’t talk about enough. Those are terpenes, the smells that cannabis gives off, and they do offer a variety of beneficial effects from this. How can you figure them out even without a lab report? We’ll discuss how that’s possible here.

What Terpenes Are

Terpenes are basically the compounds in cannabis that can smell a certain  way. It’s also found in a ton of herbs too, such as lavender, rosemary, and even jasmine and other plants. The role of terpenes is to help protect a plant. While the chemicals smell good to us, to a critter or a predator, they are bad, and it scares them off.

They also may attract certain animals to help with pollination. It’s also considered bioactive, depending on the type of concentration that’s there, it can provide some health benefits for people. They may be labeled on some products, but not on others, and here, we’ll go over how you can identify the terpenes that are on a cannabis product without actually having a label there.

How to identify

Now you may see a few companies offering labels for this, but not every company does. How does one identify this then? Well, the answer is usually through understanding the type of product, and there are a few identifying characteristics of this as well.

  • You can identify this in some cases based on the smell and some of the other factors that are there.

  • All strains have a unique terpene profile so it’s important to understand that it's all right there if you look hard enough.

  • A lot of dispensaries can usually tell you as well what is in it. they also might let you smell the terpenes that are there and that of course is what can determine the types of terpenes that are there, and the desired effects from each one

There are a few rules to terpenes in cannabis, and they are the following:

  • If it smells fruity or it has  a minty scent to it, chances are it’s going to be stimulating and even uplifting in terms of the effects.

  • If it’s musky or earthy then it’s going to be calm and sedating in terms of the effects that this can offer from some of the people that are there.

beyond the scents though, there are other ways for you to determine the terpenes that are in this.

and of course, if you feel like a scent just isn’t good in your eyes, and you don't like it, remember you don’t have to use it. a lot of times, it may not work for you either, as it cannot make a pleasant experience possible for you as well too.

In general, if you’re trying to get one that’s more stimulating, obviously, you want a flavor that’s more minty and fruity in a lot of cases.

There are also menthol scents such as those in eucalyptus that you can try too. A lot of people like that for the sole reason that it can taste and smell really good. It also offers a soothing balm feeling that a ton of people love to have, and a lot of times, it can be a good feeling for you.

A lot of times, you can get the answers to this right away from asking the budtender what they think, but if you’re still in doubt, use this rule of thumb when deciding the terpenes in this too.
